So May 2013 has been interesting and it's only May 17.
Minnesota has legalized same sex unions. Can I saw awesome!?!?! I believe that it is great that people are being afforded the same rights and legal status that others are afforded. So yes I will travel to Minnesota for weddings/unions.
Abercrombie & Fitch CEO made a statement that they don't want "fat people" as their employees or customers and intentionally only hire "pretty people" and don't sell clothes above a medium in size. First this is just now news to people? All you have to do is look into their stores to see that big people are not welcome. Their employees have been historically rude to anyone who doesn't belong. Second they have just as much of a right to make clothes that only fit a certain part of the population. It's no different then Catherines or Lane Bryant who make clothes for those larger ladies of the world. Those stores will never carry a small. Should we be boycotting them now too? Basically people it boils down to if you don't like their clothes or what they stand for then don't shop there. They don't want money from a larger demographic then that's on them. If you are concerned about young people getting the wrong message then maybe parents should teach their children healthy ways of viewing themselves and discovering their value outside of appearance and labels. Or simply don't shop there. Let's just all agree to disagree over this first world problem.
In other shopping news: a factory in Bangladesh that makes a lot of clothing that Americans buy caught fire and killed over 100 workers because the conditions were unsafe. Many of the clothes that were made, like many of the similar factories in third world countries, are shipped to American and Europe. It was later revealed that Americans buy more clothes then any other place and we "throw them away" quickly. Gone are the days of you wear things until you can't no more. Want a new shirt - you just go get it so you can fill up a dresser/closet/storage bins. It speaks more to greed and the idea that everything is replaceable and the cost of those 2 things. At what price are we willing to value others and the world in order of having something? The larger discount clothing stores are refusing to sign an agreement to hold the clothing industry more accountable for the working conditions of those who make the garments they sell. Why aren't we more concerned about this issue then say Mr. Abercrombie & Fitch finally saying out loud what he's been telling society for decades?
And the last issue - weather - in Iowa. It's been crazy. Snow at the beginning of the month and then 95 degrees 2 weeks later. People are saying Mother Nature is PMSing. Can we say global warming? Can we agree that humanity has screwed up nature? No. Want to make more bad references to PMS and the earth.? Okay denial it is. Maybe when we have another year of 80 degrees in March and people are complaining about a major brought causing the price of pretty much everything go up we can talk. But until then enjoy your bad comments.
